Ways to Use Our Careers in Practice Videos

  • Engaging in a careers exploration unit or looking to incorporate the study of careers into your subject area?
    • Use the videos as a digital classroom library for students to explore careers of interest on their own.
    • Give students an inside look at what goes into a specific career and use the videos to help develop questions for guest speakers in those careers or for student interviews with community members in those careers.
    • Give students interested in a specific career insights into that career. Have them report on what they learned, what was new to them, what were the most important insights they gained, etc.
    • Have students view one or more videos in a career area they are NOT interested in and then report on what they learned, what they gained a new appreciation for in that career, etc.
    • Have students view a number of videos across careers to identify characteristics, process, or practices that are “universal” and to respond to why they think those items came up so often.
    • Have students explore careers available in the discipline you teach and see various ways the curriculum they study is actually applied in a career in the field.
  • Working with students in a Careers Course or Careers Program?
    • Create flipped learning activities watching the video outside of class and using class time for students to share their thoughts on the discussion question(s) or work on the activity idea(s) that accompany each video.
    • As students study different types of businesses, have them watch videos to see specific examples of various types of business that are in operation and hear from the owners/managers on the processes and practices they use to succeed.
    • Use the videos as background research to help students develop questions for guest speakers in business or other careers that you invite to class.
    • Have students engaging in an individual or group research project on a career view videos to obtain primary source quotations and video excerpts they could use to create their final project, paper, or presentation.
    • As part of their study, have students go into their community to interview/shadow people in various careers. Prior to conducting their own interviews or starting their shadowing experience, have students watch videos to help them determine questions to ask and how to organize a video or presentation they create to tell about their experience.
    • Have students watch videos with entrepreneurs to develop their own “real world” definition of what being an entrepreneur really means in practice. Have them use excerpts from the videos to support their analysis.
    • Use the videos with lesson plans you create centered on characteristics and practices of certain careers. Have students identify characteristics and practices they see in the videos by providing specific references/quotations.
    • Use the videos as part of a lesson plan/unit focused on enhancing student study skills, interpersonal skills, life skills, and soft skills necessary to succeed in a career.
