The Neighborhood Leadership Academy is improving communities one project at a time through a neighborhood education program that has quietly been operating in St. Louis for nearly two decades.  See how Darren Young and his wife Charlene Lopez-Young put the economics lessons they learned into practice in creating their new Filipino barbecue food service business.

Economics in Action:  Plowsharing Crafts–Making a Difference around the World
Plowsharing Crafts is part of the growing Fair Trade Mission to help artisans and tradespeople in developing countries.  Facing challenges as a brick and mortar store, the volunteer-run store created by a member of the Mennonite church often takes its good into the community via churches and on the internet.  We talk with volunteers about what drives them to continue this mission and show off some of the unique items including finger puppets, hand-carved elephants and paper products made from Elephant dung.

Economics in Action:  Teaching Children Financial Literacy with “Savannah’s Savings Jar”
Chelsea Addison was inspired by her second grade class to write “Savannah’s Savings Jar,” her first in a collection of six books to help parents teach children financial literacy.  The book talks about goals, entrepreneurship, and return on investment among other economic principles.  Addison says kids can learn about finance at an early age and put that knowledge to use right away.

Economics in Action:  How Eradicating Poverty by Empowering Women Changes the Perception and Treatment of Women
Theresa Carrington, Chief Executive Officer of Ten by Three, discusses how empowering women to become artisans and entrepreneurs impacts women in changing their views of themselves and in changing the views of their husbands and other male members of their village.
