Global Wildlife Surveillance and Pathogen Screening Could Provide Early Warning for Next Pandemic

In the Amazon rainforest of southeastern Peru, Gideon Erkenswick, PhD, and his team collect biological samples from wildlife populations of bats and primates. “We regularly collect samples,” explained Erkenswick. “Blood tissue, fecal swabs, nasal swabs and then release animals.” Erkenswick is part of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He’s also the co-founder and director of Field Projects International, a research and conservation nonprofit organization, which is using portable sequencing technology to screen for disease-causing viruses that are associated with the movement of wildlife or wildlife products. Learn how this research could help understand the transfer of infectious diseases from animals to humans.

The company says hunters can build a database of hunting images and statistics. The goal is for hunters to analyze and learn through dashboards that highlight trends, key statistics and hunting metrics so they can predict and plan their next hunt.
