Quick Ideas for Using the Video:

  • About 20 seconds into the video, the artist Jill Downen says, “I’m redefining what drawing means. I’m redefining the materials that it’s made of, the processes that it goes through, and what the final surface might look like.” Prior to viewing the video provide that quote to the student and ask them to discuss. What do they think the artist is doing? What do they expect her works to look like? Then view the video to see her work. Continue the discussion. Do students see her work as drawing? Is she redefining it to them? What techniques, materials, ideas intrigue them that might inspire a drawing of their own?
  • What is student response to the artists’ work seen in the video? Have students evaluate the work from both the perspective of art principles as well as personal preferences.

*Tours take students to laboratories, studios, workspaces, museums and other diverse “in the field” and community locations related to the area of study.
