Melissa Purtee has been working in K -12 classrooms for 15 years and documenting her experiences with student directed learning on her popular blog Thoughts on Arting. A frequent presenter at state and national art education conferences, she is the co-author of two books from Davis Publications, The Open Art Room and Making ArtistsAdditionally, Melissa serves on the Board of Directors for Teaching for Artistic Behavior Inc. She currently lives with her husband and two sons in Raleigh, NC, where she teaches high school visual arts and art history.

Ian Sands has been teaching for more than twenty years. He currently teaches art at South Brunswick High School in Southport, North Carolina. He is also a faculty member of the Teaching for Artistic Behavior Summer Institute at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He is a frequent presenter at National Art Education Association annual conferences, and has been a keynote speaker for multiple state conferences. He has written multiple articles for SchoolArts magazine as well as The Open Art Room and Making Artists.
