Video Description: York, William Clark’s “Body Servant,” was the only African-American member of the Corps of Discovery — the official name of the band of courageous explorers whose epic journey across the continent became immortalized as the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  Emmy-Award Winning Storyteller Bobby Norfolk celebrates the man named York and the Lewis & Clark Expedition with a program that appeals to audiences of all ages.

Quick Ideas for Using the Video:

  • After watching the video have students think about what they found interesting about the video and have them share with their peers. Focus on new information that was learned, what the most important points were, connections that were made, and things that the student found interesting or even confusing.
  • Have students research other important figures/events from the Lewis and Clark expeditions. Using the information, they find students can create and practice a short story like the one viewed in the video. Have students share their stories with the class during a storytelling session.
  • After watching the video begin a class discussion on the events and participation of York during the Lewis and Clark expedition. Ask students to think about and share what was the importance of York during the time and how did his contributions impact history.
