Reducing African Poverty Through Microfinancing: The Work of Microfinancing Partners in Africa
4:59
Grades: 9 - 12

Video Description: Founded in 2006 by Antoinette “Toni” Temporiti, Microfinancing Partners in Africa has been providing microfinancing loans to villages in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa to provide a hand up not a hand out. This microloan concept was pioneered by economist Muhammad Yunus, with an eye to creating self-sufficiency which leads to confidence, a restoration of dignity and helps to eliminate extreme poverty. The loans are used to support small businesses, which empowers Africans to become more self-sufficient. Some choose animal husbandry, while others may raise fruits and vegetables or produce clothing for their families and community. Women’s prenatal and infant delivery is improved through a microfinancing-driven healthcare system. In turn, this leads to an overall improvement in healthcare and education.
