Quick Ideas for Using the Video:

  • For Discussion: Use the video with a lesson related to color. What is student reaction to the colors in Mr. Ruggeri’s paintings? What do they find appealing or unappealing? Why? Is he following regular “color rules” or is he breaking them in any way?
  • For Discussion: At the 1 minute mark, Mr. Ruggeri says, “But I don’t think art always has to have this deep meaning. I think that sometimes art can just be fun.” Use the statement as a conversation starter or journal prompt with students. What is their reaction to the statement? Have them find works of art they think are “fun” and explain why. Perhaps students can create their own “fun” works of art.
  • Activity Idea: Use the video in conjunction with an activity that has students creating their own paintings or other forms of art inspired by items and/or events in their childhood. Create an in-person or virtual exhibition of the works that includes artist’s statements.
