Theatre 159: Creating Theatre at Home – The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus
50:07
Grades: K - 12

Video Description: Grade Level:  4 and up

When school is out, there’s nothing to do and the desert sun beats down hot.  So when a walking, talking and surprisingly well-dressed coyote shows up, Sheila and her friends jump at the chance to embark on the adventure of a lifetime!  Filled with magical realism and surprises at every turn, this funny story of friendship and imagination brings the desert landscape to life.  A cautionary tale about our impact on the environment and the creatures who live in it, this is a storytelling tour-de-force in a new, original play “The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus.”

In this archived program, meet playwright Eric Coble, director Julia Flood, and actress Jamie McKittrick who brought the play to life in Metro Theater Company’s recent production and see an excerpt from the new “tabletop/theatre at home” version created by Eric Coble as a resource for teachers, parents, and students to use as they create theatre at home during this time of COVID-19.

Whether you’re involved in remote learning as a teacher of theatre, a parent of a student fascinated by theatre and theatrical play, or a student yearning for a chance to perform in this new time of remote classes, this program has something for you.  See the new excerpt.  Hear from the playwright, director, and actress.  And learn how you can create your own scene for this new version of the play to become part of a virtual theater experience.

Be sure to download Teacher Tool 769 below to learn how you can send us a video of your tabletop performance of a scene from the play or your video of the characters you create for the play and be part of our June 30 program “Celebrating Theatre at Home:  The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus.”  We are excited to see and share the theatre you create at home!
