Being a Singer and Songwriter–Bloom
5:28
Grades: 3 - 5

Video Description: Meet singer-songwriter, Bloom. Growing up in a musical family, she started out as a jazz singer. But, as her name implies, Bloom has evolved into a different kind of artist. Finding inspiration in many artists and genres, she doesn’t want her music to be categorized – but if she has to label it, she calls it, “abstract.” A relative newcomer to the music scene, her broad appeal was almost instant when her first single, “Raindrops” received over 53,000 plays in its first month. And she is not slowing down a bit!

Quick Ideas for Using the Video:

  • Ask students to respond to Bloom’s music: How would they describe it? What musical styles do they hear in it?
  • In the video, Bloom speaks about being a composer of her own music. Ask students: Do you compose your own music, write your own songs? If so, where do your ideas come from? What is your process for composing? What other musicians and musical styles influence your writing?
