Video Description: For this episode of Explore! we investigate the world of flying and ask the big picture question, “What does it take to create flight?”  This program’s special focus is on the flight of aerobatic stunt planes and commercial planes.  Through the course of this energetic and interactive cross-curricular program, students get a chance to answer the big picture question for themselves and listen to the answers of others as they learn the principles of flight and interact with aerobatic and commercial pilot Patrick McAlee.

Quick Ideas for Using the Video:

  • While viewing this video, have students take note of the definitions of the words, gravity, altimeter, pitch, roll and yaw. Replay the portion of the video of the plane in flight without the sound but with the time showing. Ask students to identify the words in action by recording the times of an example of each word.
