Art with a Message: Transfuturism

Video Description: Transfuturism is an art-activism movement shown through photography and oral history and uses technique from Afrofuturism to uplift the lives of trans and gender non-conforming individuals. This exhibition examines genderfluid individuals taking the punches in comics, cartoons, pop-culture while mostly strong cismasculine characters are the “heroes.” Artist Amber Johnson photographs and records perspectives and experiences from trans and genderfluid people of color to illustrate how transgressing gender results in liberation, but also new forms of identity challenge comes with. Artist Wriply Bennet, creates a comic book sketch that transforms the participant into an Afrofuturistic superhero.
