Quick Ideas for Using the Video:

  • For Discussion: At the 01:03 mark artist Aleida Hertel shares that in her art she likes to “highlight the need for representation and the need to understand migration as a human need.” Have students discuss this idea. Do they believe this perspective is important; how might an artist reflect these ideas in his/her work? Also, have students share what they like to highlight in their art work and why.
  • For Discussion: In various parts of the video, the artists share the importance of understanding and respecting the community where this artwork was going to be located. Have students discuss the community elements of creating an artwork like this. If they were to create a mural in a specific area of your community, what groups would they need to contact, what ideas might be important to reflect and/or convey in the work?
  • For Discussion: Have students respond to the artwork. What do they think of the subject matter? What do they like about the colors, style, etc.? Would they be interested in creating artwork like this? Why or why not?
  • Activity Idea: Prior to viewing the video with audio, show students parts of the video where they mural is displayed. After viewing the mural, have them write down their reaction to what they see and what they think might have been the purpose behind the mural and what different elements in the mural might represent. Have them share their ideas with each other in dyads or small groups. Then view the video to let students see what the artists were thinking on these same topics. The artists describe their reasons for creating the mural and explain a number of elements included in the mural between the 02:02 mark and 04:44 mark in the video.
  • Activity Idea: Working together have students plan and execute a large scale artwork, with elements that represent their area and collective heritage. They should be able to explain why each element was placed in this piece through either a written explanation or a short video they create.
  • Activity Idea: Use the video as part of your study of contemporary artists and diverse artists. Have students respond to the art work as an art critic doing a review of the exhibition and write their review as it would appear in a newspaper or magazine or record their review as it would appear on television.
