Art with a Message: Reflections on Life During COVID
2:38
Grades: 6 - 12

Video Description: The Kranzberg Gallery presents an exhibition created by Christine A. Holtz and Jessica Witte uniquely suited to the times. The two artists use embroidery, sandpainting, video, and a variety of materials to create sculptures and art works that focus on the worries and trials of sheltering in place. The pieces are at times whimsical, poignant, and fragile. Hear from the artists themselves as they lead you through the exhibition.

Quick Ideas for Using the Video:

  • For Discussion: What is student response to the art the see? How effectively do they believe the works seen exemplify the theme of home and how it was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?
  • For Discussion: In the video, the artist Christine A. Holtz says, “I don’t try to limit myself into a specific medium. My work in particular I try to incorporate the humor into it.” Have students respond to that statement as they view her work. What is their view of humor in art? Do they prefer one medium or many mediums? Why?
  • Activity Idea: Use the video in conjunction with an activity that has students creating art reflecting their experience during COVID.

*Tours take students to laboratories, studios, workspaces, museums and other diverse “in the field” and community locations related to the area of study.
