Grades: 6 - 12

Video Description: Faces of Patriotism: The Homeless Veterans Project features portrait photography of homeless veterans captured by Jerry Tovo. By giving a voice to these veterans through his photography, Tovo hopes to awaken the American conscience. There are more than 40,000 U.S. veterans living on the streets or in shelters on any given night. What will you learn about them by looking into their faces?

Quick Ideas for Using the Video:

  • For Discussion: What is the message students receive in the photographs? What do these “faces of patriotism” say to them? Have students journal and engage in conversation.
  • Activity Idea: Use the video in a cross curricular project focused on homelessness or another contemporary issue. How would students choose to bring a “face” to the issue they want to address in their photographic exhibition?

*Tours take students to laboratories, studios, workspaces, museums and other diverse “in the field” and community locations related to the area of study.
