Video Description: Sites interested in growing students’ emotional intelligence, inclusion, and empathy will want to book Erin Garcia! Her presentation is helpful for sites with autistic and other neurodivergent (ADHD, dyslexia, etc.) or emotionally disturbed (ED) students. These will benefit from the presentation about stimming and sensory processing.
If we understand our senses, we can understand ourselves. We are sensational in every sense of the word! Author Erin Garcia shares portions of her children’s book (grades 1-6) The Case of Sensational Stims, and helps all students, neurodivergent and neurotypical, understand what stimming is and why it matters.
Her talk helps build a more empathetic and inclusive school by shining a light on important matters that are rarely discussed.
Things that happen on the inside of the body can be difficult to understand. Because we cannot see them happening, they might be hard to explain. But stims are our clues for those inside (a.k.a. internal) experiences! People stim for a variety of reasons. Stimming mainly helps people manage their emotions. Sometimes people stim because of feelings they have and other times it’s because of something happening in the environment. For example, some stim because they’re happy, or sad, or anxious, or excited, or angry. Others stim because it’s too hot or too cold, or too loud, or too bright, or they’re just really hungry. Sometimes the reasons and ways people stim change. Her talk helps build a more empathetic and inclusive school by shining a light on important matters that are rarely discussed.
Here are some common ways people stim. Please note this list doesn’t include all types of stims.: Singing/chanting/humming/making noises, rocking or flapping hands.
