Transforming Treatment for Sleep Apnea

Dr. David Chang, ENT surgeon, explains the process of a new treatment, named Inspire, for Obstructive Sleep Apnea, which affects up to 30 million Americans.

    Discussion Questions:

  • Prior to viewing the video, check for student understanding about sleep apnea. Have they heard the term before? Do they know what it means? Do they know why it happens? Then view the video and check for student understanding regarding these same questions.
  • Have students view the video as a patient. After seeing the video, what questions about the device and the surgery would they have for the doctor? Have them compare this sleep apnea treatment to others available. Which would they prefer? Why? How would these potential decisions as a patient influence how they might interact with a patient if they were the doctor?
    Activity Ideas:

  • Use the video with a vocabulary activity focused on the terms below that are included in the video as well as others from the video you might select. Based on what they learn in the video, have students hypothesize the definition of each, share their ideas, and then finalize a definition based on their ideas and what they could also research.
  • Use the video in a flipped learning activity focused on sleep and have students come to class prepared to share two insights gained by watching the video and two questions they’d like answered through their own or class research.
