Improving the Outdoorsman Experience with Data Analysis
Grades: 6 - 12

OutdoorMetrix is a hunt performance and wildlife management dashboard. The St. Louis company created the web-based technology to make hunters, anglers and wildlife managers smarter and more effective by providing them with data analytics. The application allows users to map, track, log and capture hunting and harvest data. It allows hunters to manage their observations, sighting, weather data and trail cameras. The company says hunters can build a database of hunting images and statistics. The goal is for hunters to analyze and learn through dashboards that highlight trends, key statistics and hunting metrics so they can predict and plan their next hunt.

Teacher Resources for the Video:

NGSS Disciplines Addressed in Standards Referenced Below:

  • Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science
    Discussion Questions:

  • Use the video in conjunction with discussion focused on the practice of “Asking Questions and Defining Problems.” What problem do students believe the innovators are trying to solve? What questions did they need to ask to begin to find their answer? How effective do they believe the innovators’ answer is?
  • Do you have any hunters in class? If so, ask them to offer their thoughts on how this technology might or might not be helpful to them? Would they consider using it? Why or why not? What do their answers tell other students about the influence of the “end user” on the practice of engineering?
  • Have students discuss the interdependence of science, technology, and engineering on the success of the innovation. For the data to be analyzed it must be collected. What other technologies make this possible?
    Activity Ideas:

  • Use the video in conjunction with a data analysis activity for students to see an example of data analysis in action.
  • Use the video in conjunction with a journal prompt focused on the crosscutting concept “Influence of Engineering, Technology, and Science on Society and the Natural World.” What are potential impacts students see to both hunters and wildlife as a result of using this technology. Have them describe potential benefits to each and potential disadvantages to each.
