Engineering a Nearly Pain Free Blood Test for Use at Home
Grades: 6 - 12

Drawing blood samples is necessary to check for antibodies and biomarkers of disease but the process can be painful. Learn about a new innovation designed to reduce that pain.

Teacher Resources for the Video:

NGSS Disciplines Addressed in Standards Referenced Below:

  • Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science
    Discussion Questions:

  • Prior to viewing the video have students consider the reality that many patients have a fear of needles. How does that impact their time with a doctor, medical care they might be reluctant to receive, etc?. View the video to learn about this innovation to deal with that reality and have students discuss its potential advantages and limitations.
    Activity Ideas:

  • Use the video with a vocabulary activity focused on the terms below that are included in the video as well as others from the video you might select. Based on what they learn in the video, have students hypothesize the definition of each, share their ideas, and then finalize a definition based on their ideas and what they could also research.
  • Use the video as part of a unit focused on the diagnostic process and/or treatment of disease . Have students follow up on the innovations presented in the video with additional research and develop a position statement reflecting how effective they believe the innovations can be.
    Vocabulary to Consider:

  • Biomarker
  • Dermal
  • Epidermis
