Choices of Costume Designer
2:11
Grades: 6 - 12

Video Description: Meet the costume designer for Metro Theater Company’s production of “The Giver” as he describes the choices made in the creation and execution of the designs for the production.

Type of Video: Segment*
Unique Video ID: Theatre-39**

Quick Ideas for Using the Video:

  • Use the video with a writing, design, or theatre activity as you read the novel, “The Giver.” Before viewing the video, have students select a character from the novel and in written, drawn, and/or constructed form create a costume for that character. What would the costume look like? What colors would they use? What materials would they use? Why do they make the choices they do? How are those choices reflected in specific examples from the book?
  • Use the same activity as above, but have students view the video first to get an idea of how this designer created costumes for this production. Have students evaluate the designer’s choices. What would they have done differently? Then have students create their own design.

*Segment videos are short excerpts edited from interviews or interactive programs that offer flexible and differentiated ways to use the rich content included in the full-length conversation.

**The unique Video ID can be used to quickly locate a single video in the ET collection. This search function is designed to let teachers assign students to watch a specific video and have only that video appear as a search result. Just click on Search and choose “By Video ID.” Then type in the Video ID as it appears above. Be sure to include the dash.
