Ilse Altman remembers hiding in the root cellar as Nazis attacked her family’s home during Kristallnacht and emerging the next morning to see the home destroyed and Jewish holy books burning.

    Activity Ideas:

  • In group or independent projects, have students learn more about the events of Kristallnacht and share their reaction to what they learn. Have students share their reaction to the story in a journal entry or a think, pair, share activity with a classmate.
  • Have students react to Ms. Altman’s memory by creating a drawing, writing a poem or short story, or creating a short video. What aspects of her story will they choose to emphasize? Why?
